The Italian Athletics is proud to be the host of the World Mountain Running Trophy in 2004, on the
occasion of its twentieth anniversary. For the fifth time this prestigious event will take place in our
Country.
Since the 1985 edition this speciality has been developed. At that time it was exclusively practised
in Europe without any acknowledgement by IAAF and EAA. Two years ago it has been officially
recognised and is now reaching the world-wide acknowledgement.
We have been among the pioneers and we feel the protagonists of this growth. This increases our
responsibility and our engagement to best honour the twentieth anniversary of this Trophy and its
return to Old Continent, after an excursion to America, Alaska.
Sauze d'Oulx, the city designated, is in ferment. Here and over the whole Piedmont Region you can
feel the atmosphere of 2006 Winter Olympic Games. It's not a chance that for the last two years
Sauze d'Oulx have been hosting the Olympic Mountain Trophy and the third edition is coinciding
with the World Trophy.
There's an extraordinary mobilisation of energies and human and material resources. The
Organisation Committee is working hard with the support of local Institutions and Piedmont Region.
I am sure that the 20th edition of the World Mountain Running Trophy, thanks to its
technical, performance and athletics contents and thanks to the spectators sharing and media
interest, will mark another step in quality for a speciality which, for its nature, is destined to reach
the top.
